I saw this video on TV the other day and immediately looked it up on YouTube. It’s so great. Lily Allen’s voice is just beautiful, first of all, and I love that her style’s so particular and yet each of her songs sound different. While the others I’ve seen are fun/funny and have really fantastic, colourful videos (think Smile, LDN, Alfie) Littlest Things is sung in her same unique style but is a slower song and has a great black and white video. I think the video’s awesome, the way it blends her lyrics about modern love with the classic video of woman in a tan trenchcoat under a street lamp.
We’d spend the whole weekend lying in our own dirt
I was just so happy in your boxers and your t-shirt
Watching the posed scenes of the impeccable 1950s style woman walking with her beau and kissing in silhouette while hearing lyrics about 21st century young people falling in love was just brilliant. And the black and white widescreen format is just awesome. Check out the video on YouTube here.
And I remember when you started callin’ me your missus
All the play fightin’, all the flirtatious disses
Lily’s lyrics are always so great and feel really authentic. They match her voice, her image, her music. It doesn’t feel all fake like a lot of American music. I never feel like she’s trying to impress anyone or sugar-coat anything. I don’t feel like she’s trying to pretend to be anything. I guess her songs feel honest.
The littlest things that take me there
I know it sounds lame but its so true
She manages to make things personal, whithout making them corny. I might not identify with everything in her songs, but every now and then it’s like “oh that’s so true”. Check out the rest of the lyrics here (but beware a couple of annoying pop-ups).
The first time that you introduced me to your friends
And you could tell I was nervous, so you held my hand
When I was feeling down, you made that face you do
There’s no one in the world that could replace you
