This song is by MGMT, from their album Oracular Spectacular — which is both one of the best albums names ever AND totally in vibe with their sound. Again, this is a video that I saw on TV and felt compelled to check out online. Again, it’s the video with the music that makes this one really special, but the song itself is really awesome too. After that spacey music at the beginning the first few bars of the guitar remind me of the beginning of Forever Young by Youth Group (I love that song).
I’m feeling rough, I’m feeling raw, I’m in the prime of my life.
Let’s make some music, make some money, find some models for wives.
Something about that futuristic hippie tribe thing that really appeals to me. When I was younger I used to watch that kiwi show called The Tribe on Sunday mornings about a future where a diseases has killed all the adults and the kids form these tribes and packs and wear warpaint and go all savage. This is like that on speed. The awesome pixelly 70s special effects are the best. (See “the making of” the video if you’re interested)
This is our decision, to live fast and die young.
We’ve got the vision, now let’s have some fun.
In true hollywood form they’re all riding kittens through psychadelic landscapes and shooting giant insect-monsters that explode in a shower of dolphins. Just like the world should be. Check out the hi-res trailer here (warning: longer loading time), or the normal one on YouTube here. This song will take you on a trip. If you’re stressed out with work or something turn the lights off, close your eyes and just listen to it. You’ll find yourself nodding and swaying along and the lyrics about the serious business of living fast and dying young in your own vomit will really put things into perspective for you.
The models will have children, we’ll get a divorce
We’ll find some more models, everything must run it’s course.
I think the seriousness of the make-believe in the video is so awesome, the hunting, eating raw meat, burning the money, dancing round bonfires, singing about doing heroin while holding a baby…
We’re fated to pretend
The rest of the lyrics are here.
