Matt is my new hero! You’ve probably seen the clip on YouTube by now, and if you havn’t, or even if you have, I highly – extremely highly! – 非常 highly – recommend you watch the higher-res video on Matt’s site. The clip that I’m talking about is of course the Dancing 2008 clip from Matt of www.WheretheHellisMatt.com.
The website is really nice, easy to look around and enjoyable to read (written in a quirky third-person kinda way… probably by a third person), especially the About Matt section. It turns out that Matt made his first dancing video on a trip to Asia in 2003, which was uploaded onto the interwub and lots of people watched it. Enough people to make Matt “quasi-famous”. From the site:
Now Matt is quasi-famous as “That guy who dances on the internet. No, not that guy. The other one. No, not him either. I’ll send you the link. It’s funny.”
After his first trip he was noticed by a company who makes chewing gum. Stride gum, in fact. I guess they must be pretty popular in the states, ‘cos they paid for Matt to go on a second trip in 2006 which took six months – and in that time he danced his way through 39 countries! After this second trip even more people watched Matt dancing on the internet. Lots of people wrote to him and he ended up going back to Stride with an idea for one more trip, where he met up with lots of Dancing fans around the world, and so Dancing 2008 happened. All of the clips are available on the site.
So Matt is pretty much one of the luckiest guys in the world. I mean, he got paid to travel literally all around the world – twice! And I must say that if you’re gunna pay someone to do that, Matt seems like the perfect guy. I have a bit of a… what’s the word? Bias? Discrimination? Anyway, I have something in me that automatically assumes most Americans don’t care too much about the rest of the world. I know it’s not all Americans, those I have met have for the most part been really lovely people. But you know, they’re usually not overly concerned with the world outside the US. So it’s awesome that Matt is travelling around, hanging out with all these cool people, teaching them his mooooooves. He’s like doing the Amazing Race, but with time to breathe. And dance!
I saw this clip on the “Featured” section on YouTube, and I usually don’t watch those clips because they’re sponsored, so I feel like they’re just trying to sell me something. But a friend sent me the link so I watched it, and at the beginning I was kinda like “What the…?” and then it was like “Oh, I get it, he’s in a couple of different countries” and then “wait a minute, that’s quite a few countries” and “what the heck is Kyrgyzstan?” (Turns out it’s right next to Kazakhstan). Matt looks like a really nice guy. And an ordinary guy, so he’s likeable. Watching this video just made me smile. It sounds stupid, but it did. It’s people from all of the world, having fun doing the same silly dance, just for the sake of dancing! (Or for the sake of seeing themselves on YouTube :P) And the fact that it’s such a crazy dance. I mean, he’s obviously not doing it for the street cred. It’s a happy dance! From the site:
It’s actually the only dance Matt does. He does it badly.
The pictures on Matt’s website are really cool too, the interesting, fun kind of pictures people should take when they go on holiday (although they were taken by a much better photographer than I!). If you’re interested there’s a really neat FAQ on the site, where he answers questions like “Is there music playing while you dance?”, “Can I come with you on your next trip?” and “Why is the world so screwed up?”. You can also buy the soundtrack from the videos and find out more about the artists. Also on the site are some amusing outtakes (link on the main page), accompanied by comments from Matt and proving once and for all that Rwanda is a much better place to dance than the Parthenon.
So go check out Where The Hell Is Matt? and enjoy yourself!
