Owen Wilson cracks me up. There’s just something about his face that makes me laugh. Not in a mean way, I just see his face and think of all the funniest lines from his movies that I’ve seen (“The vultures are eating my head!”). So I’m always really disappointed when one of his movies isn’t that great. But I really enjoyed this one.
The movie starts with a phone conversation between Wade and Ryan, two geeks about to start high school. I really like these characters – I mean, they’re geeks, but not the uber smart kind or totally-out-of-touch with reality, they’re just the normal kind. Kind of like I was, I guess. Luckily I never had to face a bully like Filkins. He actually looks like he just stepped out of 8 Mile when he patrols the corridors in his hoodie. He terrorises Wade and Ryan, and another wee geek called Emmit in a pretty intense way.
Drillbit: So what’d you do to provoke him?
Wade: Well he’s fat, he’s a dork, and I’m awesome.
And that’s where Drillbit Taylor comes in – he answers an ad the boys put out for a bodyguard to protect them at school. What he doesn’t tell them is that he’s really a homeless bum just out for the cash. So how is an undercover bum gunna help 3 helpless nerds take on a giant like Filkins? Well, you’ll just have to watch to find out…
There are some things I really like about this movie 1) It’s got Owen Wilson in it 2) Wade’s love interest is pretty but not slutty, smart, and Asian 3) There’s a fat geek (Ryan, played by Troy Gentile) who’s got game without being repulsive à la Superbad. Seriously man, this kid is hilarious. And so darn cute.
This is a pretty fun movie for watching with friends or with that special movie-watching partner in your life. There is a bit of bad language etc. but all in fun. Enjoy!
